Abstract:
Communication is an essential input in development process of the society. The function of communication in the context of agriculture development is to inform, educate and motivate the farmers to accept new ideas and agricultural practices in order to increase production per unit of land. People in the rural area are need of information. Taking this backdrop, the study was conducted in Imphal-West and Bishnupur district of Manipur among the sample of 120 farm families from eight villages. The data was collected from farmers with the help of Agriculture Officers (AOs), Training Officers (TOs) and Village Level Workers (VLWs) using structured interview schedule. The findings of the study revealed that majority of the farmers were in middle age group having medium level of education, land holding, socio-economic status, cosmopoliteness and scientific orientation. Awareness and utilization of communication sources, education, socio-economic status, information seeking behaviour and market orientation were found significantly different among the farmers of different land holding size. Awareness and utilization of communication sources Socio-economic status, scientific orientation, information seeking behaviour and market orientation were found significantly different among the whole population even if, there was no significant difference in awareness and utilization of communication sources among the farmers of Bishnupur district. However, the association of farmersā awareness and utilization of agricultural communication sources with personal and socio-economic characteristics differs betweenthe two districts. Significant association was found between awareness and utilization of communication sources and level of education, land holding, socio-economic status, cosmopoliteness, scientific orientation, information seeking behaviour and market orientation.
