520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc Optimum utilization of available land resources depends on timely and reliable information on soils regarding their nature, extent and spatial distribution along with their potentials and limitations. Integration of Remote Sensing within a GIS database plays an important role in the mapping of soil, physiographic units and other land resources. The study area is a micro-watershed situated in mid-altitude region at Nongpoh (25º54'17.7'' to 25º54'15.4'' N latitude and 91º52'54.7'' to 91º52'66.3'' E longitude), Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya. Based on topography and major present land-use, 16 pedons were selected across an area of 2.65 Sq. km area in the micro-watershed. The soils were generally deep to very deep in depth, light yellowish brown to dark red in colour, slightly acidic to extremely acidic in reaction and high to medium in organic carbon content. Pedons located on the hill and along the slopes (NMMP1, 2, 4 &12; NMUP3, 5, 13 & 14 and NMLP7) showed cambic (Bw) sub-surface diagnostic horizon while on upland (NMUP0) and midland (NMMP10), sub-surface diagnostic horizon was argillic (Bt). However, pedons located on lowland (NMLP15, 9 & 8) did not exhibit any diagnostic horizon. The soils of the study area were classified into 3 main orders viz., Inceptisol (77%), Entisols (19%) and Alfisols (4%). Dominant soil moisture regime in the upland area is Udic (77%) and Aquic (14%) in the lowland areas. Other soil moisture regime were also observed in the study area viz. Fluvents(4%), Udalfs(4%) and Orthent(2%). Eight Sub groups have been identified with Typic Dystrudepts dominating in the area. Clayey Mixed Hyperthermic is the dominating soil family followed by Fine loamy Mixed Hyperthermic and Coarse loamy Mixed Hyperthermic. The soil has further been classified into nine series namely Umbuda-1, Umbuda-2, Umbuda-3, Umbuda-4, Mawroh-1, Mawroh-2, Mawroh-3, Mawroh-4 and Iewmulong. Various soil properties, derived from the soil resources inventory were displayed at spatial format in GIS environment which will be helpful in identifying the problems and potential of the region and to develop suitable planning activities of the micro-watershed.
