520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc Lentil is a short duration legume crop well suited for cultivation during winter season under North Eastern Regions (NER). After kharif season paddy cultivation, most of the land in NER (approx. 2.5 M ha) remain fallow. Though NER receives a plenty of rainfall (>2,000 mm per year), it is confined mainly to monsoon seasons. Hence, crops grown in rabi season often suffer due to moisture stress during maturity stage. To overcome these difficulties during winter seasons, practices like mulching and applying irrigation based on crop needs may improve the performance. The agronomic field trial entitled “Performance of lentil cultivars under different organic mulching” has been carried out with the following objectives. 1. To evaluate the effect of different organic mulches on growth and yield of lentil cultivars. 2. To find out the effect of different organic mulches on water productivity of lentil. 3. To workout the Benefit-Cost Ratio (BCR) of lentil crop production. The experiment was carried out under split plot design with four main-plot treatments (mulches), viz., i) un-mulch, ii) paddy straw mulch, iii) maize stover mulch, iv) weed mulch (applied @ 5 t ha-1) and four sub-plot treatments (lentil cultivars), viz., i) HUL-57, ii) PL-4, iii) PDL-1 and iv) PSL-9. The experiment was replicated thrice. From the field experiment, it was observed that, performance of crop under the paddy straw mulch was better followed by weed mulch, maize stover mulch and un-mulch. The growth parameters, viz., plant height (28.18 cm), number of branches per plant (4.86), dry matter accumulation (3.72 g plant-1) and CGR (2.46 g m-2 day-1) were registered highest under paddy straw mulch. The yield parameters, viz., number of pods per plant (43.57), number seeds per pod (1.67), seed weight per plant (1.69 g) and economic yield (723.3 kg ha-1) were also found highest under paddy straw mulch treatment. Among the cultivars, PL- 4 cultivar performed better over the other three cultivars. For the cultivar PL- 4, plant height (27.03 cm), number of branches per plant (4.82), dry matter accumulation (3.68 g) and CGR (3.16 g m-2 day-1) was found higher. The highest water productivity was reported for paddy straw mulch (3.25 kg ha-1mm-1) and among the cultivars PL-4 cultivar, water productivity was estimated to be 3.22 kg ha-1 mm-1. The economic yield (717.7 kg ha-1), Biological yield (1874 kg ha-1), harvest index (39.0%), gross returns (` 36,593 ha-1), net returns (` 16,153 ha-1) and benefit cost ratio (1.79) was found highest in the cultivar PL- 4. Paddy mulch may be practiced as a resource conservation technique under umroi region, Meghalaya during winter season for better performance of winter crops.
