Summary, etc Training is the process of imparting knowledge and skills to employees to enhance their performance and productivity at work. Before any training programme commences, Training need assessment is an important step in order for the whole training programme to be successful. Training need is the gap between the actual performance and the required performance. Training need assessment is the first step in the training process. Sikkim is India’s first 100 per cent organic state with approximately 66,000 farmers who require information and continuous training regarding various dimensions of organic farming. Before providing the farmers any training regarding organic farming, the Agricultural Extension Personnel need to be trained first in this aspect. Under this backdrop, the study had been undertaken to assess the training needs of Agricultural Extension Personnel of Sikkim with the following objectives: (1) To identify the perceived training needs of Agricultural Extension Personnel on organic farming. (2) To examine the association of personal and organizational variables with training need of Agricultural Extension Personnel. (3) To find out the problems affecting training of Agricultural Extension Personnel as perceived by them. The study was conducted in six districts of Sikkim covering all 61 Agriculture Development Officers and Horticulture Development Officers. The primary data was collected from the respondents through well-structured interview schedule. Analytical tools like mean, standard deviation, Training Need Index, Chi square test, and Garretts ranking technique were applied to achieve the above mentioned objectives. The study revealed that most of the respondents had medium level training need (40.99%), followed by high level (32.78%) of training need. The overall area wise training need of Agricultural extension personnel was ranked in order where Plant pathology was found to be ranked highest. The variables age, educational level, training exposure and service length had a significant association with training need of the respondents. The major problem affecting training of Agricultural Extension Personnel was lack of funding followed by untimely training programmes. The study suggests an establishment of educational and training institution in the State exclusively for Organic farming, setting up of a technical expert cell in the State Department in the field of Plant pathology, Entomology consisting of trained officials and requirement of regular training need assessment of the Agricultural Extension Personnel as training need can change over time.
