Among the co-operative credit institutions, State co-operative Banks in every state of the country plays important role in catering the credit needs of the rural masses through Primary Agricultural Co-operative Credit Societies (PACS) at the grass root level. Manipur State Co-operative Bank (MSCB) is the apex co-operative bank in the state of Manipur. The state has two tier co-operative credit structures and its objective is to develop the economic status of its member on the basis of co-operative principle. Keeping in view the present study “ Performance Analysis of Co-operative Credit Institutions In Manipur” was conducted with the objectives: i) To examine the size of operations and recovery in two-
tier co-operative credit institution, ii) To analyze the financial performance of the two-tier co-operative credit institution and iii) To study the loan delinquencies and suggest measures for improvement in repayment performance of the two-tier co-operative credit institution. A sample of 5 numbers of co-operative societies was selected from the state. Among the 5 numbers of PACS, 3 numbers of PACS from valley region were randomly selected from the Imphal West district as the district is having highest number of PACS and a sample of 2 numbers of PACS from hill districts from Senapati district has been
selected randomly. Secondary data from 2000-01 to 2011-12 from the selected PACS were collected for the study. Various statistical tools such as Compound annual growth rate, ratio analysis and delinquency were employed to analyze the data. The effective coverage of PACS was found to be better in hill region than the valley region, but it was poor in terms of providing loans. The overall recovery performance of MSCB was poor. The Heigrujam and Kangmong PACS of vallay region , found to be good in recovery
position. Ratio analysis has revealed that the liquidity position of PACS was satisfactory. Long term solvency position of the PACS was poor . Test efficiency ratio of the PACS revealed that Heigrujam and Kangmong PACS and Sapermeina PACS were found efficient. Profit earning ability of the selected PACS was not up to the mark. To reduce the delinquency of the bank, quick and effective follow up by the bank officials for loan recovery, encouragement of prompt repayment to the borrowers, look into the problems of the borrowers through the respective society.
